Firmware Engineer

YesterdayRedmond, WA

Meta Reality Labs - Research (RLR) is dedicated to the research and development required to bring virtual and augmented reality to billions of people around the world. At the Codec Avatar lab, we aspire to a vision of social VR and AR, where people are able to interact with each other across distances in a way that is indistinguishable from in-person interactions. We're now seeking a talented firmware engineer on the Mobile Telepresence team to accelerate the progression of low-friction, authentic social presence in virtual reality. In our current pipeline, a multitude of sensing components, including image sensors, microphones, inertial management units, are installed on prototype headsets or similar apparatus in order to collect a rich suite of information that reflects the user's physical state. This information is then processed by our state-of-the-art algorithms to allow for a computational representation of the user to be captured, transferred and reconstructed, all without the burden of a cable. All of these peripherals need to be controlled by embedded systems of our design, and it would require the support of this firmware engineer. The ideal candidate for this position shall be familiar with the embedded software stack, principles of operations for various sensors and microcontrollers, industry-standard communication protocols, real-time operating systems; a working knowledge of electrical engineering is appreciated, and background in FPGA, wireless communication, sensory synchronization would be a bonus. The ultimate goal is to function in a multidisciplinary team with fellow engineers and researchers to deliver holistic system-level solutions that would achieve mobile telepresence.

Firmware Engineer Responsibilities:
  • Lead the design and development of embedded software engineering activities and provide technical leadership and guidance to team members
  • Analyze, design, develop, and debug firmware for a wide variety of AR and VR devices
  • Define and implement power-management, boot loaders, scheduling, inter-processor communication, computer vision and firmware/system interfaces on RTOS and/or bare-metal environments
  • Work with suppliers to secure technical information for embedded operations
  • Communicate and document firmware behaviors to multidisciplinary teams
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering
  • 7+ years of experience in embedded software development
  • Experience working with embedded hardware platforms and exposure to concepts such as clock-level issues, interrupts, and polling
  • Experience building software for embedded systems or custom SoCs
  • Demonstrated expertise in developing with modern Real Time Operating Systems
  • Familiarity with peripherals such as I2C, SPI, I2S, UART, and USB
  • Experience leading complex features or projects across multiple teams
  • Experience with lab instrumentation such as oscilloscopes, logic/protocol analyzers for debugging embedded systems at HW level
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with high speed interfaces such as USB, Ethernet, PCIe, MIPI, and CXP
  • Experience with audio signal processing standards such as AVB, TDM, PDM
  • Experience with time synchronization protocols such as NTP, PTP, gPTP and IRIG
  • Experience with designing hardware systems for computer vision and audio applications
  • Experience delivering consumer electronics
